I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July.
In my trying to make these elections broad and transparent I am let with a lot of resistance and a general feeling of this being an impossible task.
All the station fund drives so far (KPFK is in the middle of one) have improved in performance over the winter drives. Although WPFW and KPFT came in 10-13% under budget from last reports, that is still a lot better than the 20-25% shortfalls in the winter drive for those stations.
According to LaVarn Williams, interim CFO of Pacifica and acting General Manager of WBAI, the WBAI fund drive that just concluded May 30th raised over $839,000! The goal for this drive in the Fiscal Year ‘09 Budget was $672,000, according to James Ross, Chair of the National Finance Committee.

The below Pacifica financial report was prepared by Joe Wanzala, Vice Chair, Pacifica National Board, Listener Representative, KPFA Local Station Board (with input from Jamie Ross, Pacifica National Board Treasurer and Listener Representative on the WBAI Local Station Board)
Pacifica’s overall failure to meet our budget goals (this is for figures available through May 31) is due to a number of factors, primarily:-
1) overspending at KPFA and at WBAI on salary and related costs, and
2) lower than expected income at KPFA, WBAI and WPFW.
It's important to remember that KPFA and WPFW have cash in the bank, so they can lose money during a fiscal year and still not run out. WBAI of course does not have money in the bank, so WBAI's annual deficits have to be funded essentially by KPFA listeners and to some extent by WPFW’s listeners. However, at the rate they are going, WPFW is going to put a serious bite in their reserves this year.
The Coalition for a democratic Pacifica (CdP) is sponsoring a KPFA Local Station Board (LSB) Election Forum.

It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Grigsby Hubbard as interim General Manager of WPFW effective immediately. Mr. Hubbard was one of the founders of WPFW and has maintained a commitment to the station for over 35 years. His involvement actually began before the station even went on the air. He is well known and respected by virtually all stakeholders of WPFW. Mr. Hubbard has decades of managerial experience in both the nonprofit and for profit sectors.
