Greetings KPFA and Pacifica Family,
The fall fund drive ended yesterday at 3:30 pm having raised $826,000, a little over our budgeted goal, in 16.5 days. We will continue to raise funds online and project an additional $10,000 to $15,000 in online pledges in the coming two weeks.
The below commentary was published in the San Francisco Bayview this week as well as in this weekend's Berkeley Daily Planet.
The weekend edition of the Planet also has 4 other stories about KPFA.

The struggle for listener democracy at KPFA
http://www.sfbayview.com/News/Editorial/The_struggle_for_listener_democr...
Written by: Adrienne Lauby, Henry Norr, Akio Tanaka, Perrine Kelly, Hep Ingham, Sepideh Khosrowjah, Noelle Hanrahan - Wednesday, 31 October 2007
The situation at KPFA Radio, some encouraging signs notwithstanding, remains grim. The idea of participatory democracy was conceived as a response to the crisis of the '90s, but has yet to take hold. Many members of the KPFA staff, who embraced the concept when it helped save the station, do not support it now that listener members have been given real governing power. In other words, while the "savepacifica" era was characterized by solidarity between staff and listeners, the "save(d)pacifica" era has been characterized by polarization between these two groups.
The below is an announcement about the only KPFA LSB Listener-Candidates' Election Forum that is scheduled for this election cycle. All are invited. Event is free.

The below statement was written by Gregory Wonderwheel, an attorney who was actively involved in the Save Pacifica movement, and helped to craft the new Pacifica Bylaws:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This ruling is in violation of a candidate's free speech right to craft his statement as he wishes. (ruling: http://pacificana.org/comment/reply/159 )
A person is qualified to be a candidate by meeting the qualification requirements in the Bylaws. A corporation may not add additional qualifications by policy that would circumvent the qualifications of the Bylaws. By adding a qualification that demands a candidate complete a statement according to guidelines puts a qualification on top of a qualification that is not permissible.
PNB Teleconference
Thursday Nov. 1st, 5:30 pm PST
the purpose of the meeting is consideration of
a.) the events leading up to; and,
b.) remedies for the use of Pacifica resources to disseminate candidate statements involving violations of the the Fair Campaign Provisions in ballot mailings that have gone out to KPFA and WBAI members during this delegate election cycle.
and
other matters related to publicity/promotion regarding elections

I got to listen to KPFA some of my growing up years and have always considered it an invaluable source of information to help understand what is happening in the world. I'm a mathematician by training, grew up around the world, (my father was a science teacher and had various international jobs finishing his career at UNESCO) and search for the balance that might make the world more peaceful. This site is a small effort towards that goal.
